Engineering X works in partnership with a wide range of global stakeholders to achieve collective impact as we try to prevent harm to human health and safety through open and uncontrolled waste burning, as well as minimising the environmental impacts.
UNHLC partnership
Engineering X partnered with the United Nations High Level Climate Champions in 2021, since then we have funded a Waste Lead and Deputy Waste Lead to raise the topic of open burning of waste on the global climate mitigation and resilience agenda, leading to progress in reducing it. We currently funding a Global Waste Lead, Dr Andriannah Mbandi, to also translate learnings from Africa, globally.
Multi Stakeholder Partnership
Following the Solutions Roundtable at COP27, key partners launched a Multi Stakeholder Partnership. The partnership aims to mobilise African governments and municipalities to implement the landmark September 2022 resolution by African environment ministers to improve waste management through technology, infrastructure, finance and behaviour change.
Co-Chairing the partnership are the Africa Ministerial Conference on Environment and United Cities and Local Governments of Africa, with UNHLC and Engineering X as interim Secretariat.
International Solid Waste Association
Engineering X has been working with the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) on this urgent challenge since the publication of the Global Review on Safer End of Engineered Life. In September 2022 the partnership was formalised at the ISWA World Congress, held in Singapore. The partnership has collaborated on side events for high level events, participatory workshops and they are a core strategic partner in the Multi Stakeholder Partnership.
Climate and Clean Air Coalition
Engineering X, the lead in a consortium; Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, International Solid Waste Association, Practical Action and UN Habitat, have been awarded $1.3m USD under the Climate and Clean Air Coalition’s (CCAC) Transformative Action funding call. The CCAC are also a Steering Committee member of the Multi Stakeholder Partnership to eliminate open burning of waste in Africa by 2040.
