About us

Engineering X is an international collaboration founded by the Royal Academy of Engineering and Lloyd’s Register Foundation that brings global experts together to engineer change.

We believe we’re better together. We work in partnership to achieve our vision of engineers playing their key role in addressing global challenges.

We believe in amplifying unheard voices and building evidence to create impact where it’s most needed.

Our programmes bring engineers, academics, policymakers, NGOs, and business leaders together with partners from around the world, building global networks to tackle the most pressing engineering, safety and sustainability problems. The Engineering X community is currently active in 31+ countries.

Our Engineering X community is currently working on 5 missions.

Our Story

Since 2019 Engineering X has designed and implemented 5 global missions tackling pressing safety, preparedness and sustainability challenges, and innovating a new model of programme design and delivery.

We collect evidence, create diverse and global expert communities around the challenge, and amplify unheard voices, particularly in the global south. By listening to what our communities tell us, we craft unique programmes and partnerships that have impact where it matters most.

We leverage the networks and expertise of our founding partners to create missions that harness the power of engineering to tackle the greatest challenges of our age.

Partners

Lloyd's Register Foundation

Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF) is an independent global charity that support research, innovation, and education to make the world a safer place. The Foundation partnered with the Academy to tackle the most pressing engineering safety and sustainability problems, and to develop these into practical and accessible outputs for the engineering profession and affected communities.

LRF is one of the founding partners for Engineering X and sponsors three missions, providing £5 million for each to run for an initial period of six years:

  • Engineering Skills Where They are Most Needed
  • Safer Complex Systems
  • Safer End of Engineered Life

BEIS

The Academy's core grant from the Government’s Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy department currently funds one Engineering X mission:

  • Pandemic Preparedness

The Newton Fund

The Newton Fund, administered by BEIS, builds research and innovation partnerships with countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to support economic development and social welfare, tackle global challenges and develop talent and careers. They sponsor one Engineering X mission:

  • Transforming Systems through Partnerships
