Workshop overview
We are seeking expressions of interest for participation in the Safer End of Life of Offshore Wind workshop on 16-17 May 2024 in Central London, UK.
The workshop, chaired by Professor Susan Gourvenec FREng, will bring together global stakeholders from across sectors and countries to consider how to make the end of life of offshore wind safer and more sustainable. This is an urgent issue as the sector faces huge growth in the coming years. As we tackle this emerging issue we want to hear from as many voices as possible and hope to engage stakeholders from across different regions – both established and emerging markets –, sectors and disciplines.
The 1.5-day workshop will be participatory, focusing on three key end-of-life topics for offshore wind:
- Technology and infrastructure
- Circularity
- Regulation

Event dates and format
On day 1 of the workshop, the three key topics will be explored through presentations, sharing of best practice examples and in-depth group sessions. The insights from day 1 will then inform a focus on the way forward for a safer end of life of offshore wind on day 2.

Who should attend?
To ensure a meaningful workshop that listens to all parts of the system, we want to engage a diverse global group. Please find below some categories that we have identified. This is non-exhaustive, please still apply if you are not listed below, but have something to contribute.
- Current and future stakeholders involved in the end of life of offshore wind, including considering the potential safety challenges.
- Geographic representation: we welcome applications from stakeholders working in countries with established offshore wind markets, but explicitly also encourage those from countries or regions in the early stages of offshore wind capacity development to express their interest.
- Public sector: policy makers, government departments, regulatory bodies and others involved in offshore wind planning and governance in the public sector.
- Private sector: wind Original Equipment Manufacturers, Operation and maintenance providers, wind farm operators and owners, decommissioning and removal providers, shipping and logistics providers, port operators, research, development and innovation teams, industry representing bodies, consultancies, insurance providers, companies offering circular solutions and others in the offshore wind private sector.
- I/NGOs focusing on the environment, just transition, representing communities affected by offshore wind, workers unions, supporting the expansion of offshore wind globally.
- Researchers focusing on engineering, environmental impact, just transition, legal, political and economic factors of offshore wind.
- Other sectors with relevant end of life processes to learn from, such as onshore wind, offshore oil and gas or nuclear.
